Summer has officially arrived: B.C’s largest waterpark is open for the season.

From thrills, spills and drops to a leisurely, lazy river ride, Cultus Lake Waterpark has it all.

Experience it all month long – at significant savings and without the summer crowds – with June’s after-school sliding special. For the four hours before closing, all weekday admissions are just $12, including taxes and parking, says general manager Andrew Steunenberg.

No surprise, with school wrapping up, many birthday parties are planned.

“We’re a family-oriented park and a big part of that is the after-school special,” Steunenberg says. “We really encourage people, if it’s a hot, sunny day in June to come out – you’re going to beat the crowds.”

Here’s what else you need to know for your best-ever visit:

Tip No. 1: While this year’s biggest changes are enhancing the visitor experience behind the scenes, last year’s addition to the ride round-up, The Rattler, remains new to many. This extreme, black hole body slide slithers between the Blaster and Twister slides, with sliders gaining speed before shooting from between gigantic rattlesnake fangs.

Inside information: Enjoy a few early runs on The Rattler, Valley of Fear, Radical Rapids and Colossal Canyon before the park fills.

Tip No. 2: Board the park’s largest raft for a whitewater experience in the state-of-the-art Colossal Canyon, where passengers twist and turn through a treed, 700-foot river. One of the park’s most popular rides!

Inside information: Opting for the Boomerang raft? Lines can get long, but enjoy beautiful views of the park, mountains and forests while you wait.

Tip No. 3: Ahoy matey! Slow down in Pirates’ Cove, an interactive spray park with climbing structures, three body slides and tot-focused features. Nearby is Pier 84 restaurant, family washrooms, picnic tables and a hot tub where parents can watch kids play.

Inside information: Watch out for the giant pirate head that fills with water before suddenly – and often unexpectedly – soaking the playground below.

Tip No. 4: Don’t care for crowds? June to mid-July is usually quieter, with weekdays typically calmer in the height of summer. And you’ll definitely see more slide action on cloudy days. Even if it rains, the water is heated and the Espresso Hut serves delicious hot drinks.

Inside information: With five giant hot tubs throughout the park, a warm-up is always near!

Tip No. 5: With 100-plus picnic tables, ample green space and attractions for ages, it’s easy to while away a day. Don’t forget the sunscreen, hat, water and towels, but if you do, they’re available on-site along with numerous food options.

Inside information: Visitors are welcome to bring food from home to enjoy, but no outside commercial food is permitted – see online for details.
