A man is charged with assaulting RCMP officers after a confrontation downtown Chilliwack last week.

It was shortly after 2 a.m. on Jan. 8 when Jason Roberto Vatcher was allegedly standing with a group of people near the side of a building in the 46000-block of Yale Road.

Vatcher drew the attention of a patrolling Chilliwack RCMP officer, and the officer quickly discovered he was subject to a court-ordered curfew.

He was out on bail facing four firearms charges from Dec. 18 in Chilliwack. There is, in fact, a photo of Vatcher holding a firearm posted on a Facebook page under his name from around that same time.

During his arrest on Jan. 8, Vatcher allegedly punched and kicked officers to break free. He briefly did escape but was caught and taken into custody.

The 38-year-old from Hatzic is charged with breach of undertaking or recognizance, willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and two counts of assault peace officer.

“Fortunately no one was injured during the arrest,” said Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Rail. “RCMP officers relied on their training to safely apprehend a violent person.”

Vatcher is well-known to police with numerous arrests, mostly from Abbotsford and mostly from between 15 and 20 years ago.

Vatcher was in Chilliwack court for a brief video appearance on Jan. 14 and is next due in court Jan. 21 where the Crown is scheduled to apply to revoke his bail.
