Job fair planned for power project

Big Silver construction camp requires up to 60 people

Dozens of jobs are up for grabs – for those willing and able to work in the remote, eastern shores of Harrison Lake.

Innergex is building a run-of-river power project at Big Silver Creek, about 40 kilometers up the East Harrison Forest Service Road. They've hired a contractor (CRT-ebc) to build a construction camp, a project which will need 40-60 people over the next two years.

Positions include a wide range of skills and experiences, including administrative assistants, crane operators, certified heavy duty equipment operators, drillers, labourers, truck drivers, carpenters, first aid attendants, cooks and housekeepers, civil engineers, field technicians and surveyors.

A job fair is being held at the Agassiz Legion on May 31, from 9 a.m. To 4:30 p.m., where Innergex The Big Silver Creek Project is a proposed run-of-river hydroelectric power generating facility which will have an estimated yearly energy output of 139.8 Gwh. Once construction begins, the project should take two years to complete, said Innergex environmental manager Isabelle Deguise.

Innergex's website states that the project will feature:

•    An intake structure, comprising a weir to create a headpond, and an intake to divert a regulated amount of water from the stream.

•    A penstock and/or tunnel to convey the water downhill to the powerhouse.

•    A powerhouse to enclose the electricity generating equipment.

•    A tailrace to return the diverted water back to the creek. In the case of Big Silver Creek, the tailrace will be designed to remain wetted at all times and/or to eliminate the risk of potential fish stranding.

•    A switchyard to transform the generated electricity to the desired transmission voltage.

•    A transmission line linking the project to the point of interconnection to the provincial electricity grid.

•    Access roads, including existing forestry roads, deactivated forestry roads that will be reactivated, and new roads.

•    Temporary land and water use for construction purposes.
