The Kent Harrison Arts Council is 45 years old this year and everyone is invited to an open house Sunday, June 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ranger Station Arts Gallery to celebrate this milestone and the untold number of volunteers who have over the years devoted their time, energy and creativity to keep the Arts Council alive and flourishing.

For the past forty-five years, the Arts Council has been committed to creating a community that supports and values artists, where exposure to the arts stimulates imagination and creative expression, and where the arts is an integral part of the community improving the overall quality of daily life.

Through the operation of the Ranger Station Art Gallery, the presentation of many workshops for individuals of all ages and the administration of the nationally acclaimed Artist (Writer) in Residence Program, the Arts Council is continually trying to enhance the quality of life within the local community.

Along with celebrating the Arts Council’s 45th anniversary, the June Gallery show ‘Narratives of the Lost’ by writer in residence Bren Simmers in collaboration with visual artist Laurel Terlesky and musician Adam Hill will open. In this much anticipated show lost objects are re-imaged in a photography/poetry/drawing/sound collaboration.

It all started with photographs of lost objects taken on daily walks around Squamish. By framing these objects as art – gloves placed carefully on branches for their owners to reclaim – they become an entry point into narrative. This project hopes to spark conversation. Who did these items belong to and how do they reflect our changing community identity?

The afternoon will get underway at 1 p.m. Local musicians Adam Hill and Andy Hillhouse will perform two sets, one at 1:30 p.m. and one at 3 p.m. The official opening of the ‘Narratives of the Lost’ show and the acknowledgment of the 45th anniversary will take place at 2:30 p.m. There will be a display illustrating some of the history of the Arts Council and lots of refreshments.

Join the Kent Harrison Arts Council Sunday, June 4 1 p.m. at the Ranger Station Art Gallery for the opening of the June show ‘Narratives of the Lost’ and to celebrate the 45-year history of the Arts Council. For more information contact the Arts Council at kentharrisonartscouncil@shaw.ca.
