Teens ward off man with candy

Police ask parents to remind kids of safety rules after Harrison incident

Police are advising parents to review safety rules regarding strangers after an incident in Harrison Hot Springs last week.

Two 14-year-old girls were approached by a man in a van on Chestnut Drive. He asked them if they would like some free candy, and when they responded no, he left the area.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20. The man is described as Asian with greying hair, driving a beige Chevrolet Venture van, possibly at 2002 model.

"We want parents and teachers to be aware that this incident occurred," said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck.  "It is always a good idea to re-visit with kids the importance of recognizing a stranger and what to do if approached by someone they don't know."

District 78 Superintendent Dr. Karen Nelson is asking students and staff to be extra vigilant.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Agassiz RCMP at 604 796-2211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
