Audrey May Hughes passed away on June 23, 2010 at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital at the age of 85 years. Born in Hazel Slade, England on October 17, 1924, Audrey was the only daughter of George Thomas Nixon and Nellie May Nixon.

Audrey was predeceased by her husband of more than fifty years, Alfred Hughes. She is survived by all six of her children, John (Pauline), Edward, David (Elaine), Ronald (Cherie), Gordon (Wendy), and Ruth, and by her five grandchildren, Phillip, Christina, Merrilee, Olivia, and Melissa.

Audrey Hughes lived in England before, during, and after World War II and was married in 1942. She emigrated to Canada in 1954 with her five sons to join her husband who had come over the previous year to start a new life for the family. They lived in Toronto until 1958 when they moved to Calgary. Their daughter, Ruth, was born in 1958. While raising her family, Audrey was active in Home and School Associations and in fund-raising for charities such as United Way. She worked at Sears in Calgary for several years and, after retiring, moved to Agassiz in 1986. Audrey was then active in the United Church in Agassiz. Her interests included English smocking, sewing, and reading.

In celebration of a life well-lived, a Memorial Service will be held at the Agassiz United Church on July 10th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.
