SCHMIDT
Hermann (Opa)
Our loving Dad and Opa went home on February 5, 2005 at the age of 76.
Born on July 28, 1928 in
Lutzenwestedt, Germany, he was raised on the family farm where he
later met his lifelong sweetheart, Olga, as she passed by on her way to the town dairy with milk from the farm she worked on. They were married
January 20, 1950. In 1951 they
travelled to Canada and made their home in Chilliwack where they started their new life together. They continued farming and began a family.
Opa farmed in Chilliwack until 1980, then in Agassiz until 2000. He was a jack-of-all-trades. His favorite hobby was photography and thanks to his
patient efforts with this, there is a treasury of family pictures. He enjoyed occasional fishing trips and he loved social gatherings. Among family and friends he would often be heard
discussing his most recent repair
project, or explaining his latest gadget.
He will be fondly remembered by his family: daughter Helen (Stan) Nickel; son, Henry; grandchildren: Eric
(Peggy) Nickel, Christel (Franz)
Douglas, Sheldon Nickel; great
grandchildren Hailey Nickel and Bowden Douglas; brother, Claudius and family in Germany; brother-in-law, Adolf (Margarete) Stelter and family; sister-in-law Adeline Sommerfeld and family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Olga, in 1998; son Harry in 1982 and his daughter, Ellen, in infancy. His prayers are now answered as he has been reunited with his dear loved ones and sweetheart.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff of the Extended Care Unit; Dr. Fitzpatrick; the staff at the Lynwood Retirement Home and the Home
Support for your loving care and
support.
Funeral Services will be held at the Chapel of Henderson's Funeral Home on Thursday, February 10, 2005 at 11:00am.
Should family and friends so desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or the B.C. Cancer Agency.
