Mix and Match

Brand loyalty. I’m so over it. (And I’m 16!) If you use phrases such as “Chevy rules,” Mopar or no car” or “First On Race Day” don’t worry I get it. I used to be a hardcore Mopar kid, until I got older. But I will say, never have I been against the crossbreeding of motors.

This is on my mind because of a friend. He and his father are building a 70’ some Ford pickup with an old turbo five cylinder Mercedes motor. This build wouldn’t be half as interesting if they rebuild the small block and the manual trans that was in it. Safe and unseen or different and noticed? Does that matter? That’s bound to opinion, although it does anger me they scraped a perfectly good 360 and some sort of manual transmission.

I take a second here to think of my own hypocrisy. Because I am one that would not put anything but a Chevy small block in my C/20 because of the simplicity and availability of parts.

There are senseless swaps out there such as a small block Ford into a Cuda or other swaps wrecking classic muscle cars.

On the the other hand, there are certain vehicles out there that are universal platforms for motors, my belief being the model T is one of the best.

A fox body mustang and older jeeps I’ve also come to know as common platforms for engines today. Back in the day 30s or 40s coupes left plenty of wide open doors for a hot rodder to build and create regardless of brand, but that was also in a simpler time.

Regardless of personal brand preference, your own builds, your first car or even a certain orange ball of fire with a 01 on the side launched over a creek you will have a certain nostalgia that will taint your opinion on a particular brand in a good or a bad way.

That being said, maybe it’s time someone put a VR38DETT out of a GTR into a Camaro or Mustang.
