Agassiz Community Garden celebrates successful season

Gardeners dedicated plaques, received awards on Saturday

Gardeners gathered on Saturday morning to celebrate the fruits of their labour at the Agassiz Community Gardens.

At the Agassiz Community Gardens Fest, members of the local Lions Club and the community gardens unveiled recently-installed plaques on their four raised garden beds, crediting PowerWood and the local Lions for their contributions.

District of Kent Mayor Sylvia Pranger recalled when founder Anne-Marie Dupperon approached council about the community gardens back in the early 2000s.

"You guys made it happen," Pranger said during Saturday's celebrations. "I do see (Anne-Marie) once in a while, and she's sho happy that the garden is still operation and even more beautiful than it was before. Thank you for providing food. Thank you for providing inspiration to all of us to grow a garden with you. Thank you for all you do for our community."

Pranger and Dupperon are honourary Agassiz Community Gardens members.

The community garden was originally roughly 20 plots, but it has since grown to more than 50 plots, including four raised garden beds for those who live with mobility issues.

The gardeners at Saturday's event celebrated with a light lunch and awards for the best gardeners of the season. The winners were Helena Monkiewicz in first place, Jane Ong in second place and Maria Stanek in third place.

Those interested in planting at the garden should contact either Laurens van Vliet at 604-845-0252 or Don O’Neil 604-796-1222.
