The Agassiz Elks 311 got a jump start on the season of giving this year.

Agassiz Elks president Ron Meyers told The Observer the club raised $862 to support various charities – voting to top it off to $1,000 during their annual November Food Drive and Customer Appreciation campaign, and regular meat draws, among other events.

“Our former president, Jack Kramer, always said to support local first, and we do that in his honour,” Meyers said.

For many years, the local Elks club has given back to a number of local organizations, including the beloved Storytime in the Park, the Agassiz Fire Department Golf Tournament and Agassiz Legion Poppy Campaign. The Elks also traditionally donate to the Royal Purple Fund for Children and B.C. Elks Campss for Children.

B.C. Elks Camps for Children were originally designed for children living with special needs but due to high demand, they’ve been made available for any organized group of children under the age of 18. The camps are available year-round with no charge to the user groups. There are three camps in the province: Camp Elkcanoe near Salmon Arm, Camp Elkgrove in Aldergrove and Camp Elkhaven near Courtenay.

The Royal Purple Fund for Children spans all of Canada and provides for the medical needs of children with hearing and speech disorders.

The Agassiz Elks Club is located at 1824 Agassiz-Rosedale Highway. It is open six days a week. Though membership is encouraged, everyone is always welcome.

The club has a meat draw ever Friday, drawing at 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
