Agassiz Fire Department Society nets record $17,000 in donations after golf tourney

More than 70 local businesses donated prizes

Dozens of local golfers hit the links for a noble cause for the 20th annual Agassiz Fire Department Society Charity Golf Classic.

Volunteer Chris Wilson said the tournament at Harrison Resort Golf Course raised a record $17,000, an all-time record for the tournament and $7,000 above the donations taken in last year. 2019’s tournament netted $14,000.

Wilson said the Agassiz Fire Department Society received donations from more than 70 local businesses. The fire department extended thanks to the many volunteers who made the tournament happen.

As the tournament that took place on 9-11, Agassiz Fire chief Gerald Basten said a few words in solemn acknowledgement of the sacrifices thousands of firefighters in the United States endured during the terrorist attack 20 years ago.

Wilson said funds donated to the Agassiz Fire Department Society go to a slew of local, provincial and national organizations, including the AFD’s Graduation Bursary (geared toward those entering the public service field), Agassiz RCMP Victim Services Program, Terry Fox Foundation, Agassiz Harrison Community Services Christmas food hamper and community Christmas dinner, Agassiz-Harrison Lions Club and much more.

Wilson added the charity organization also assists in one-off projects, including the District of Kent’s Spray Park, which was built in 2017.
