Agassiz-Harrison organizations rally behind Regional Aquatic Centre

Agassiz-Harrison groups are getting creative and raising funds for the future Regional Aquatic Centre.

The cabin owners in Cascade Bay on Harrison Lake supported the RAC through their annual Leaf Blower Race. The group of residents takes to the chilly waters of Harrison Lake with inflatable tubes powered by – you guessed it – leaf blowers. Altogether, the zany race netted $1,020 in support of the local project.

St. Anthony’s Thrift Store recently provided a $3,200 donation toward the future RAC.

The RAC has been a major undertaking for well over 10 years. The provincial and federal governments provided $10 million in grant funding toward the project, a bulk of which came from B.C. The remaining $10 million to fund the project must come from the municipalities in the area, local First Nations communities and other sources. The District of Kent is looking to raise $1 million through a variety of events and sales of local merchandise.

The aquatic centre is to feature a six-lane lap pool, a lazy river, a hot tub, sauna, steam room and more. It will ultimately take the place of the Ferny Coombe Pool.

If you wish to donate to the ongoing project, visit kentbc.ca/RAC, call 604-796-2235 or 604-796-8891 or stop by the District of Kent Municipal Hall or Community Recreation and Cultural Centre.
