Every October, parts of the community light up with purple at night. This year is no exception.
The Agassiz RCMP and District of Kent are participating in this October’s Purple Light Nights campaign. This campaign is designed to create awareness about domestic violence, give hope to those facing abuse, support survivors and honour those who lost their lives to domestic violence.
The Agassiz Community Policing Office on Pioneer Avenue and Municipal Hall will light up purple and have a display of silhouettes p;aced in front of the buildings to promote awareness to all who pass by. The silhouettes are part of the Silent Witness Project, established in 1990 in New Brunswick. The life-size renderings in red and black are displayed to remember women who have been killed due to domestic violence.

“Domestic Violence continues to be an issue within our local communities,” Agassiz RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Mike Sargent.
Through awareness campaigns such as Purple Light Nights we can all work together as a community to prevent it.”
Purple Light Nights began in Washington state in 2006. It has since spread to 24 U.S. states, three Canadian provinces and 12 communities across B.C.
