The District of Kent is planning for two different Canada Day celebrations this year — one in-person, and one virtual.
Kent council approved the two plans during the Monday night meeting (March 8). The first plan would see Canada Day take place virtually, much like it did in much of Canada for 2020.

The event would include online activities, including story-time, craft-making and entertainment, as well as a live stream of the national anthem being filmed in Pioneer Park. The day would also include a virtual bike rodeo, where participants could submit pictures or video of their decorated bikes.
The virtual event would still have in-person activities, although these would be modified to adhere to public health orders. These include a drive-thru pancake breakfast and grab bags with crafts, bike rodeo supplies, coupons and stickers.
As in past Canada Days, there would be a free swim at the Ferny Coomb Pool and free gym time at the Community Recreation and Cultural Centre, although families would need to pre-register for specific time slots.

If restrictions are eased, the district is planning to hold an in-person celebration instead. This would see the same virtual bike rodeo, drive-thru pancake breakfast, free swim, free gym time and live streamed national anthem as the virtual plan.
However, it would also have inflatables and carnival games in Pioneer Park, as well as a live DJ and individually packaged popcorn for participants. The area would be fenced off, and families would be required to pre-register for 90-minute time slots during the day.
The district is expecting the virtual Canada Day celebrations to cost around $3,000 and the in-person events to cost $5,800.
