Agassiz-Harrison Community Services is looking to spread some Thanksgiving cheer – and the clock is ticking.

AHCS is joining local food banks across the province for the B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive that takes place this week. According to the food drive’s website, the provincial goal is to gather 600,000 pounds of food – or the equivalent of more than 40,000 Thanksgiving turkeys.

Throughout the week, Sept. 19 to 23, Agassiz residents have the chance to fill up paper bags with non-perishable food items for AHCS’s food bank.

Volunteers will deliver large brown paper bags to homes throughout Agassiz for residents to fill throughout the week. By Saturday (Sept. 24) morning at 9 a.m., participants are asked to leave the filled food bag at the end of their driveways, and from there, volunteers will deliver them to the food bank.

Food drive bags can be picked up at the AHCS food bank at any time Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cash donations will also be gratefully accepted.

The B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive began in 2008 in Burnaby, and from there, it quickly expanded to the entire province. It’s estimated 14,000 volunteers will be gathering food from roughly 400,000 homes this year, serving 105 community food banks in 80 communities. Last year, the Thanksgiving Food Drive saw 500,000 pounds of food collected.
