Censored Sasquatch makes list of Black Press’s top 10 wackiest stories of 2022

Harrison’s Sasquatch statue appears to be camera-shy

A seemingly bashful Sasquatch landed one of The Observer’s most-read stories on Black Press’s top 10 wackiest stories of the year.

Back in late March, some local Facebook groups were amused by a quirk from Google StreetView that blurred out the face of the iconic Sasquatch greeting visitors at the entrance of Harrison Hot Springs. While the face-hiding feature is originally meant to work on humans who happen to get caught on Google StreetView as photography takes place, it seems the technology also works on wooden statues.

The StreetView program also blurs identifiable license plate numbers in addition to faces. While there’s the possibility of requesting additional blurring through a report page, it seems there is no way to un-blur an object or person, even upon request. In other words, once the blurring is done, it’s not going to be removed; our local Sasquatch statue is permanently “censored” in the eyes of Google StreetView.

The original story was no. 20 on the list of top 50 visited pages on The Observer’s website last year.

The Black Press digital team was in charge of compiling the wackiest stories of the year, which included the “ducknana” trend, a music teacher scaring a bear away with a trombone and a sturgeons caught with a fish down its throat.
