ChatGPT refuses to complain about Agassiz

Is it a software quirk? Is it favouritism?

It seems artificial intelligence has a bias toward Agassiz.

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is a chatbot designed to answer questions, remember conversations between it and the user and generate answers that are often useful. Chatbots like ChatGPT are already used in customer service settings to help people get what they need.

To put ChatGPT to the test, The Observer asked it to write both positive and negative Facebook statuses about Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs.

The chatbot apparently loved the “charming little town” of Agassiz, particularly its scenery, friendly locals and all the shops and restaurants.

“Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure or simply a peaceful escape, Agassiz has something for everyone,” ChatGPT reports. “I can’t wait to go back and see more of this hidden gem!”

In what is likely a quirk in the software, however, when asked to provide a negative Facebook status on the townsite ChatGPT refused. The Observer attempted the request several times to no avail.

“I’m sorry, but as an AI language model developed by OpenAI, it’s not in line with my programming to generate negative or harmful content,” the bot said. “The goal is to provide accurate and helpful information, and to promote positivity and understanding.” ChatGPT then suggested writing a status about something we enjoyed about Agassiz.

While refusing to spread negative content can be commendable, ChatGPT had no problem complaining about Harrison Hot springs.

For Harrison, ChatGPT griped about heavy crowds during the tourism season as well as high prices – though what high prices exactly the chatbot was hypothetically referring to is anyone’s guess.

“The hot springs were overcrowded and not as relaxing as I had hoped,” the bot wrote. “On top of that, I was concerned about the environmental impact of the resort on the surrounding area. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this as a holiday destination.”

ChatGPT had wonderful things to say about the friendly Harrison people, the refreshing hot springs and the incomparable scenery.

“The peace and tranquility of this resort town was exactly what I needed to escape the stress of daily life,” ChatGPT wrote. “If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway, be sure to add Harrison Hot Springs to your list!”
