Local bakery Natasha’s Pies has joined forces with Imagination Library Fraser Valley to promote literacy.

The Imagination Library announced the Pies with Purpose program on Tuesday (April 5), an effort to raise funds for the local early literacy program that would send age-appropriate books for children every month from birth to age five. The books are free due to individual donors, local businesses and non-profits as well as a partnership with the Dollywood Foundation.

“Who doesn’t love pie?” said Imagination Library Fraser Valley Advisory Committee Lois Chadburn. “When we were considering fundraising ideas, Natasha’s was an instant yes because they are homemade, delicious and available in time for Easter.”

Program champion Brian Martin said the communities of Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, Chilliwack and Hope have had close to 450 children take part in the early literacy program since 2008, shipping more than 9,000 books.

“We need community support to keep growing,” Martin stated. “For each pie sold, the Imagination Library will receive $5.00. Every dollar raised will cover program costs for books and shipping. The average cost per child per month is $3.55. Each pie sold makes a difference.

Pies are available in four flavours: apple, blueberry apple, bumbleberry and strawberry rhubarb. Pies can be ordered online through gofundraise.shop/pieswithpurpose until Sunday, April 10.
