It's not every day someone lives for an entire century.
The Chilliwack Probus Club celebrated Joyce Newbury Clapp's 100th birthday during their annual general meeting on Tuesday, April 15. In addition to celebrating her centenarian birthday surrounded by family and friends, Clapp was awarded a certificate from Probus Canada and an honorary lifetime membership to the Chilliwack branch.
Clapp was born May 1, 1925 in Maple Creek Saskatchewan to Ingram Lloyd Newbury and Susanne Sophia Lilly Cash. Joyce married Allan Clapp, who would go on to found the Chilliwack Probus Club. Allan passed away in 2019 at the age of 92.
When her birthday officially comes on May 1, Clapp would become one of roughly 9,500 people living over the age of 100 in Canada, according to the most up-to-date information from Statistics Canada.
Probus clubs across Canada act as social organizations created to give a space for friendship and fun among retired and semi-retired seniors. "Probus" combines the words "professional" and "business." There are more than 4,000 clubs across the world, including 250 in Canada with more than 35,000 members. The first club was established in England by the Rotary Club of Catherham back in 1966.
The Chilliwack Probus Club is also open to seniors in Agassiz-Harrison.
