Hours have been extended for the first local cooling shelter of the summer.

The District of Kent announced via social media that the Friendship House (7272 Morrow Road) is open to the public as a local cooling centre amid sweltering temperatures forecasted for the week ahead. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 25 to 29. Hours have been extended due to a heat warning that swept over the Fraser Valley this week.

Bottled water and cookies will be available.

Other places to stay cool in the District of Kent include the Community Recreation and Cultureal Centre, open from 6:15 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the Agassiz LIbrary, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A heat wave will hit B.C. this week, raising temperatures to between 31 and 35 C inland and 25 to 29 C near the water. Cooler weather is likely next weekend, according to Environment Canada.

The hottest time of day is late afternoon to early evening while the coolest is near sunrise.

Extreme heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for young children, pregnant people, older adults, those who are chronically ill or those who work or exercise outdoors. Watch for heat illness symptoms such as swelling, rashes, cramps, fainting or worsening health conditions.
