Strap on your skates — Harrison’s new synthetic ice rink is set to welcome skaters starting this weekend.

The synthetic outdoor rink has been installed on Harrison Hot Spring’s newly paved boat launch parking lot. Right now, the rink and an interior light display are ready for its unofficial launch at the Lights by the Lake opening on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Admission to the synthetic rink is free, although there is a cost for skate rentals if you don’t bring your own. Helmets are recommended, and children under 12 have to be accompanied by someone over the age of 16.

Hockey is not allowed on the rink. According to the manufacturer, it can accommodate 60 leisure skaters at one time.

The rink will be open daily between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. The concession (which will have skate rentals) will be open between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., Thursday to Sunday, as well as holidays, excluding Christmas Day. Public washrooms will be available when the concession is open.

Although the rink will be open to the public starting Nov. 23, the grand opening of the as-yet unnamed rink will be taking place on Monday, Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. The rink was funded by grants from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and the minister is likely to attend.
