Little Library kiosk is back – with a facelift

The kiosks opened in Agassiz in 2020

It’s not quite a traditional sign of spring, but it’s close.

The Little Library kiosk at Pioneer Park in Agassiz has returned to its perch. Thanks to skillful woodworking from Mike Veenbaas and members of the District of Kent staff, the kiosk has been reinstalled and is sporting a new look. Rather than the more traditional square design, the doors now have unique, nature-inspired windows and the sides of the kiosk read “Take a book, leave a book” with “Pioneer Park” written on the front.

The Little Library kiosk – and its sister kiosk in Shep Park – officially opened in August 2020. The Agassiz Library was initially responsible for stocking the books while the Friends of the Agassiz Library tend to the kiosk.

The kiosks were and continue to be a true community effort, with the Friends of the Agassiz Library providing funding, Agassiz Elementary Secondary students and teachers collaborating on building and design and shingles courtesy of Scott’s Roofing.

The kiosks are part of the Little Free Library system, which is a U.S.-based non-profit network with kiosks around the world. It is estimated 300 million books have been shared through this library network. This amounts to roughly eight books for every Canadian.
