Powwow blends with fitness in upcoming public class hosted by UFV Student Union Society

Energy and culture will come together during a powwow fitness class hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Student Union Society this coming week.

The Powwow Fitness Class with Michelle Reed takes place virtually on Feb. 25. It’s free and open to the public.

Reed is a founding member of Woodland Sky Native American Dance Company, and the creator of N8V Fitness which combines culture, health, and well-being. She has been featured in the news as an ambassador of Indigenous women, and is an example of the way Indigenous communities are dancing their way to fitness, through programs combining powwow moves and aerobics.

She is a member of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Ojibwe and lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In the upcoming hour-long powwow fitness class, people will learn the moves normally seen at a traditional powwow as they follow Reed’s instructions and interact with other participants.

“We believe that this event will help our community and our students to stay connected, active, and to learn more about this culture,” said student president Jessica Levesque.

This is not the first virtual dance class the Student Union Society has held during the pandemic. Back in December, they had a great turnout for their Bhangra Dance Class with Gurdeep Pandher, Levesque added.

“We had everyone energized and in a great mood in the class,” she said.

Every is welcome to register for the Powwow Fitness Class with Michelle Reed. It’s an online event taking place Thursday, Feb. 25 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. To register for this free event, go to the Eventbrite page.
