UK Tourists who visited the Fraser Valley last month are thanking locals after a terrifying experience on the Agassiz Rosedale Bridge.

Lisa and Keith Williams of Northumberland, UK, were cycling to Hope Aug. 17 when Keith had a cardiac episode on the Agassiz Rosedale Bridge.

“There was no warning, one minute he was fine and the next he was lying unconscious in the road, bleeding from his head,” wrote Williams in a letter to the Chilliwack Progress.

Williams thanked locals who came to the couple’s aid, including ‘Doug and Tim,’ who stored their bikes, and Doug’s wife Susan, who provided food, drinks, transportation to the hospital, “and was a source of comfort and support.”

The couple was backpacking from Vancouver to Banff at the time of the incident. When Williams sent the letter last week, she said Keith had been discharged and was waiting a “fit to fly”certification.

She thanked the ambulance crews and staff at the Chilliwack General Hospital for their hard work and support.

“Our first visit to Canada has not gone as planned but we have been blessed with the kindness of the people we’ve met [in] Chilliwack,” she concluded her letter.

“If these great people are typical of Chilliwack residents then you can all take pride in your wonderful community spirit. It has left an unforgettable imprint on us and we are sure that we will return in future.”
