It’s time to take control of your health.

And to help in that journey, the University of Fraser Valley Health Sciences department has filled its latest Health and Wellness Expo with information for the public. The event is planned for Monday, March 26, and there is no admission cost.

Topics presented will include cancer screening, dealing with stress, quitting smoking, and taking care of your teeth. They’ll also cover issues like fentanyl, binge drinking, and emergency preparedness.

A special Dean’s Speaker Series will be held at noon. Dr. Cathy van Ingen, is a leading social change researcher with work in areas of gender-based violence, sport, trauma-informed physical activity, geographies of sport, sport media, and youth, van Ingen investigates the relationship between sport, health, inequality, and culture. She is also a researcher from Brock University and co-founder of Shape Your Life, a free, non-contact boxing program for female-identified people who have experienced violence.

Visitors will be encouraged to move around the Health and Wellness Expo at their own pace, depending on their interests.

“It’s an exciting and meaningful opportunity for BSN nursing students to engage with peers, staff, faculty and members of the public in discussions about statistically relevant health topics. Participants can ask health questions, share health stories and reflect on steps they can take to maintain or enhance their health,” says nursing professor Kate McCulloch.

The Expo takes place in the atrium of Building A at the Chilliwack campus from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Dr. van Ingen’s presentation will be held in the Aboriginal Gathering Place.

UFV Health Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, a Kinesiology degree, a Practical Nursing diploma, a Health Care Assistant certificate, and a Certified Dental Assistant certificate.
