'Off they go!' Agassiz-Harrison residents take the polar plunge

A quick January swim a chilly tradition for some

A few Harrison Hot Springs residents and visitors gathered on the shores of Harrison Lake to take a traditional New Year's Day dip.

There is no official polar bear dive event for Harrison Lake or the village, but that does little to hinder those who would wade into the cold waters for the sake of tradition – no matter how outrageous the temperature.

Harrison Lake never really gets very warm as it is a glacier-fed body of water. Combined with the chill of early-year winter, the conditions are not for the faint of heart.

Brave souls across the Lower Mainland took the polar plunge in a variety of bodies of water on Jan. 1. This includes the annual tradition of the Penguin Plunge into the Harrison River at Kilby Provincial Park – solely to "embrace the new year with friends, family and neighbours."
