Chilliwack artists kick off new year with nature-themed exhibition

Natural Expressions by Chilliwack Visual Artists Association at Cultural Centre until Feb. 19

The current art exhibition at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre is like a breath of fresh air.

It’s been two years since the Chilliwack Visual Artists Association (CVAA) held its annual exhibition which kicks off the new year every January.

And like every other event that has been cancelled or postponed over the past two years, the reason for the delay is all thanks to the pandemic.

After being cancelled in 2021, the CVAA’s annual group show is back with a refreshing nature-based theme. It’s quite fitting given the fact that many people have been spending a great deal more time outdoors lately.

Natural Expressions is the name of this year’s art show and sale.

“Nature in the broadest sense is an inspirational theme for all art forms. This exhibit focuses on the unique natural expressions of CVAA featured artists through their various visual art mediums, both in the abstract and by realistic images,” the CVAA stated in a press release.

Members of the CVAA were hanging the artwork for the show on Tuesday, Jan. 11 inside the O’Connor Group Art Gallery at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. It was organized chaos as the artists carefully figured out where each piece would be displayed.

Bright paintings of horses, photographs of sunsets, collages and mixed-media pieces all rested up against the walls waiting to be installed. There are portraits, pieces made from repurposed clocks, ceramic dishes and woven baskets in the show as well.

“The diversity of these artists’ interpretations is stimulating, emphasizing how nature is both all around us and deep within us.”

In total, 21 members are part of the group show and everything is on sale.

Natural Expressions runs from Wednesday, Jan. 12 to Saturday, Feb. 19. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday. Admission is free.
