Local artists have an opportunity to dive deep into the world of comics soon.

The Kent Harrison Arts Council (KHAC) welcomes comic artists Jazz Groden-Gilchrist as part of their World of Words Virtual Writers Workshop 2022. “Dynamic Layout in Comics” takes place March 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Agassiz Library (7140 Cheam Avenue).

Groden-Gilchrist said one of his favourite parts about making comics is deciding how pages are laid out.

“Composition is a beautiful and exciting puzzle that can be used to make comics dynamic and alive as well as reinforce the narrative content within the panels,” reads the announcement from KHAC.

Suitable for ages 13+, this workshop will highlight Groden-Gilchrist’s thought progress for designing meaningful and interesting compositions. Participants will take a comic page and recompose it to make it more dynamic and clear as well as make quick sketches and bring their pages to life. Participants can bring their own comics or choose from books provided. Everyone will bring home a completed comic page.

For more information, contact the Agassiz Library at 604-796-9510.

Groden-Gilchrist is a comic artist and illustrator from Vancouver who describes himself as “definitely not a cluster of sentient dreadlocks possessing a human body forcing it to draw comics and play Dungeons and Dragons, that’s ridiculous.”
