Police in Surrey are asking for the public's help in locating Kalid Yimer, 33, who is wanted in connection to allegedly lighting a man on fire in a Surrey assault on Aug. 2.

Last Friday, police in Surrey responded to a call of a serious assault at a business in the 10200 block of City Parkway in Whalley involving a suspect who "allegedly assaulted the victim by throwing an accelerant on his body and proceeded to light him on fire."

The victim suffered serious burns and was taken to hospital, police said.

The suspect then stole a vehicle and fled the scene. The stolen vehicle, a white Mini Cooper, has since been recovered, Surrey RCMP reported on Saturday morning (Aug. 3).

Police believe Yimer is in the Lower Mainland or travelling to Alberta. He is now wanted in connection to the attempted murder investigation.

He is described as five-foot-six, with dark hair, brown eyes and a medium build.

“Given the severity of the incident on August 2, 2024, Kalid Yimer is believed to be violent and dangerous, and police are releasing an enhanced photo to locate him and warn the public,” Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha, media relations officer with Surrey RCMP, said.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the suspect or with any information regarding the incident is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file 2024-113412.

If you see the suspect, police issue a warning to not approach him but to call 911.
