Dear Editor:

On Sunday, July 17, 9:45 a.m., my wife and I and a friend left Green Point to circumnavigate Echo Island in our kayaks. As we neared the most southerly point of the Island, we observed smoke coming from a campfire. We thought it a bit strange that we did not see any persons attending the campfire with the wind blowing quite hard.

There was a blue tarp hung between trees behind the fire so we presumed the campers were nearby. As we drew close to the shore, our calls announcing our arrival were not answered. We put ashore and found a half-hearted effort had been made to put out the fire and the campers had left. The fire was filled with numerous tin cans and tin foil, fairly large trees had been cut down and nails pounded into standing trees. We put out the fire.

Just a reminder to campers: please feel your fire’s ember to make sure they are cold. Remember, you require a permit to cut down trees. Also, it is unsightly for others when you leave your garbage behind and dangerous to leave nails in trees.
