The rainy weather wasn't enough to deter hundreds of people from attending the celebration at the Harrison Hot Springs Marina.
The Sq'éwqel Development Corporation (SqDC) recently close the sale on the marina and hosted a celebratory event to mark the occasion on Saturday, May 17. Attendees enjoyed food trucks, local vendors, entertainment and fun for the whole family.
"The sunshine may have taken the day off, but the rain couldn't dampen the excitement as we came together to mark a new chapter for the marina," The SqDC stated in a social media post, thanking all who attended Saturday's festivities.
SqDC serves as the economic arm of the Seabird Island (Sq'éwqel) First Nations community. They announced the purchase of the Harrison Hot Springs Marina in February for the price of $5.2 million. At the same time, SqDC also purchased the Harrison Grand Motel (280 Esplanade Ave. in Harrison Hot Springs) and a 36-unit apartment complex in southern Chilliwack.
The Harrison Hot Springs Marina is the largest of its kind on Harrison Lake and approximately a five-minute walk from the downtown core of the village. There are 225 slips available and two acres of gated parking. The most recent real estate listing for the marina estimates it could potentially bring up to $1 million per year in revenue for the First Nations community.
