$50,000 in contraband seized at Kent Institution: Correctional Service Canada

More than $50,000 in various contraband and unauthorized was recently seized in a Correctional Service Canada operation at Kent Institution.

According to an Oct. 28 statement from the CSC, the contraband – with an institutional value of $52,640 – was seized Oct. 12. Items seized included five cell phones, two charges, two weapons and tobacco.

The Agassiz RCMP were notified and the CDC is investigating.

The CSC uses a number of tools to keep contraband out of the maximum-security federal institutions. These include

ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

“CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” The CSC stated. “CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.”

The CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions concerning drug trafficking activities and other security issues. The toll-free number is 1-866-780-3784.
