Agassiz garage severely damaged during structure fire

Resident escaped fire safely, home had smoke damage, AFD chief says

No one was inside while a garage burned in Agassiz on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Agassiz Fire Chief Gerald Basten, the AFD was dispatched just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 10) to a structure fire on the 7000 Block of Oakwood Drive. A two-bay garage was fully engulfed; while the home itself was threatened by the fire, minimal fire damage to the home itself. There is, however, extensive smoke damage. The one resident who lives inside escaped safely.

Agassiz, Popkum and Harrison Hot Springs fire departments all attended the incident.

Basten said the home was located just beyond the standard 300 metres from the community water system and hydrant grid, which called for the need for extended hose lay distances and relay engines to supply water.

“The Agassiz Fire Department developed this procedure and became the first department in Canada to receive certification to the ‘Large Diameter Hose Lay,’” Basten told The Observer. “Without this procedure water has to be trucked to the scene, greatly affecting the suppression tactics and effectiveness.”

The cause of the fire is unknown as of publication and is being investigated.
