The District of Kent council is supporting a public consultation process for a proposed telecommunications latticed tripole at 1501 Johnson Rd.

Notification packages will be sent to all properties located within 150 metres of the property, asking residents for their input on the 50-metre-high tripole intended to improve coverage and network quality for Agassiz and in particular, homes along Haig Highway.

“Right now they have some dead spaces or…coverage gaps where service is intermittent,” says Darcey Kohuch of the District of Kent’s Planning and Development Services. “It’s just to get some continuous coverage throughout the area.”

The proposed telecommunications site will sit on a flat triangular lot bordered by agricultural properties to the east and south and by the Haig Highway to the north and west. The tripole will provide seamless signal transmissions to bridge gaps in partner networks coverage, so more people in Agassiz can have dependable networks.

According to a council report, other sites had been considered for the tripole but were rejected because of their proximity to residential neighbourhoods.

The consultation process will ask residents about the preferred location on Johnson Road, but ultimately the tower and its location has to be federally approved, explains Kohuch.

“It’s a federal approval for these towers but there has to be a public consultation before the project,” he says.

A public information meeting will be held at the Agassiz Friendship House Dec. 6 from 7-8:30 p.m.
