ELECTION 2022: Municipal nomination packages available now

Do you have what it takes to run for public office?

Election packages are available at the District of Kent and the village of Harrison Hot Springs for those interested in running for office.

To run for local office, you must be a resident of B.C. for at least six months before filing the nomination package. You do not have to live in or own property in the area where you are running for office. You will need to be over the age of 18 by general voting day (Oct. 15), be a Canadian citizen and not be disqualified under the Local Government Act.

According to the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, for this year’s elections, mayor campaigns are limited to $10,797.83 and councillors are limited to $5,398.92. Third-party advertising is limited to $809.84.

There are five positions up for election in the district and in the village of Harrison – one mayor and four councilors.

For the District of Kent, completed nomination packages must be returned between Aug. 30 and Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the District of Kent Municipal Hall at 7170 Cheam Ave. in Agassiz. The packages can be faxed to604-796-8516 or emailed to elections@kentbc.ca; originals of faxed or emailed nomination packages must be received by the Chief Elections Officer by 4 p.m. on Sept. 16.

For the village of Harrison, nomination packages must be turned in to the Village Office at 495 Hot SPrings Road between Aug. 30 and Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The packages can be emailed to info@harrisonhotsprings.ca, but originals must be given to the Chief Elections Officer by 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 16.

Candidates will be declared on Sept. 9.
