Various school districts across Canada are grappling with a "cyber incident," but the Fraser-Cascade School District 78 is not one of them.

There have been reports out of Ontario and Alberta of a widespread data breach experienced with the data management software PowerSchool between Dec. 22 and Dec. 28, causing the leak of potentially sensitive student and staff information across North America.

SD78 superintendent Dr. Balan Moorthy confirmed that the local school district was not affected. A communique from PowerSchool indicates the district does not use PowerSchool SIS, the system where the data was breached. There is no action needed on the part of the district, students, staff or families.

A release from the Toronto District School Board – one of many affected by the breach – said on Wednesday (Jan. 8) that they are still assessing the exact information that was affected in the leak. The data accessed by the unauthorized user was deleted and, as of Wednesday, no data from that district had been posted elsewhere online.

The investigation is ongoing.
