The parking lot on the 200 block of Esplanade Avenue may be turned into a hotel in the future.

A 72-unit hotel could be on its way to Harrison Hot Springs' beach front.

Council directed staff to set up a public meeting for a proposed development for 260/270 Esplanade Avenue.

The proposed hotel – which would replace the gravel parking lot between Milos Greek Taverna and the Harrison Grand Motel – would include a 4,000-square-foot restaurant that would seat up to 33 people, and a three-floor parkade.

The village attached several subjects to the prospective development permit, including a works and services agreement, landscaping agreement and a $525,000 irrevocable letter of credit.

The date for the public meeting concerning this property has not yet been set.

Deputy Mayor Michie Vidal chaired Monday's meeting.

In other council business:

- Council approved a wayfinding sign to be incorporated into the existing boat launch project. The village's Age-Friendly Committee expressed the need for the triple-sided board to not only display official village business but to provide a space for notices for local programs and special events. Community services manager Christy Ovens said notices would be allowed for up to 30 days. While ideally it would be self-managed, Ovens said the village's public works team can easily fit keeping the board up-to-date into their routine.

- Council unanimously approved authorizing staff to apply for two years of funding through the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Community Resiliencecy Investment Program, FireSmart Community Funding and Supports Program. The village is asking for up to $200,000 per year to help reduce wildfire risk, which have recently included training and equipment for the village's fire department.

- Council approved requesting that the Kent Harrison Joint Emergency Planning Committee create an Emergency Bylaw Update Sub-Committee with District of Kent staff. The sub-committee would be devoted to updating emergency bylaws in the District of Kent and Harrison to keep them up-to-date with the upcoming Emergency and Disaster Management Act from the province.

The next regular Harrison Hot Springs Village Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall (290 Esplanade Avenue). The meeting venue is subject to change.

Online attendance is also available via Zoom; those interested can register through harrisonhotsprings.ca. Video recordings of the meetings will be archived on the village’s YouTube page.
