Kent Institution inmate assaulted, hospitalized

Another inmate has been assaulted at Kent Institution.

Correctional Service Canada stated multiple assailants assaulted an inmate on Aug. 9. The inmate was transported to an outside hospital for treatment and has since returned to the maximum-security institution.

The Agassiz RCMP and CSC officers are investigating the incident. No staff members or other inmates were injured during the incident. The assailants have been identified and CSC said appropriate action has been taken.

“In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the CSC will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures,” the CSC stated.

In recent months, there has been at least one assault per month at Kent Institution, the most recent being on July 13, when two inmates were hospitalized following an assault. The inmates were treated and returned to the institution. The July 13 incident marked the first in recent years that involved more than one victim.
