There's a new addition coming to the shores of Harrison Lake.
Construction on the village's newest playground has begun. The old playground has been removed as crews work to install rubber surfacing and the new playground equipment. The project will include an accessible playground, inclusive play features, a communication board, a fully wheelchair-accessible we-go-round and swings.
Back in May, Council voted 4-1 (ex-councillor John Allen opposed) to approve a $700,000 contract to revamp the beachfront playground through the village's Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) funds. Council devoted $100,000 in RMI funding back in 2013 to fund then-new structures to benefit a plyaground that was "seriously lacking," in the words of then-councillor John Buckley.
B.C.'s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport manages the RMI program. The funding is designed to assist resort communities like Harrison to augment their crucial tourism industry. Examples of projects funded through the RMI program include big events like the Harrison Festival of the Arts and infrastructure upgrades like work on the boat launch.
The project is expected to be complete sometime in November. Several parking spots along the beachfront may be closed off as construction is underway.
