Local firefighters had their hands full late last week, including a vehicle on fire north of Harrison Hot Springs.

Agassiz Fire Chief Gerald Basten confirmed both fire departments were dispatched to the scene of a motorhome completely engulfed in flames on Thursday (June 30) afternoon at the northernmost point of the AFD’s fire response area. The flames threatened to extend into the forest.

Quick-acting fire crews stopped the spread of the fire into the nearby forest; Basten said there was potential of the vehicle fire to turn into a much larger incident. The vehicle fire itself was also brought quickly under control and extinguished. B.C> Wildfire Service also had personnel on the scene to curb any fire that extended into the forest.

Basten said the cause of the fire was determined to be a mechanical failure involving the fuel system. One engine from both the Agassiz and Harrison fire departments attended the scene as well as a water tender from Agassiz.

The Agassiz Fire Department responded to seven emergency calls on that Thursday alone, including the ATV crash north of Harrison, a motor vehicle incident on Highway 7 and three medical calls.
