Mountain Institution COVID-19 outbreak shows signs of slowing

60 inmates were infected in latest outbreak, CSC says

Just under half of the Mountain Institution inmates involved in the most recent outbreak in the area have recovered from COVID-19.

According to recently published information from Correctional Services Canada, 60 inmates have tested positive during a recent COVID-19 outbreak that was initially reported on Nov. 28. The numbers have risen slightly from last week from 55 cases of COVID-19 to 60.

CSC reports 27 inmate have recovered while 33 cases are still active. The current outbreak is less than half as large as the previous Mountain INstitution outbreak, which infected 132 inmates this spring.

Mountain Institution tested the most inmates of all three local CSC institutions. To date, 1,742 COVID-19 tests have been administered with 197 coming back positive at Mountain Institution. Kent Institution administered 969 tests to date with 114 coming back postive. Minimum-security facility Kwìkwèxwelhp Healing Lodge in Sts’ailes administered 224 tests with 19 coming back positive.

Kent Institution had the biggest outbreak to date of the local prisons with 99 inmates being infected. This outbreak lasted nearly two months between late December 2021 and into early February 2022.

There have been no deaths associated with any of the six local CSC Instituion COVID-19 outbreaks.
