Correctional officers at Mountain Institution near Agassiz seized more than $21,000 worth of contraband in a recent operation.
Correctional Service Canada reported that officers intercepted inmates attempting to bring contraband into the medium-security institution on Nov. 15. Efforts from correctional officers, detector dogs, security officers and other staff resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine and three cell phones. The institutional value of the seizures is $21,250.
“The CSC uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions,” the CSC stated on Monday (Nov. 20). “These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.”

The CSC said they are heightening security measures to prevent future contraband situations. They work in partnership with the local RCMP to combat drug trafficking.
The CSC has set up a phone tip line for all federal institutions – 1-866-780-3784 – to collect information about contraband, drug trafficking and other security issues.
