The Agassiz Elementary Secondary School (AESS) senior girls and boys teams both placed second in their respective categories at the Hope tournament on Saturday.
The girls lost a hard-fought battle to Hope 50-34 in the first game but the Eagles bounced back on Saturday morning with a 45-34 victory over D.W. Poppy Secondary School from Langley. Katrina Lawley had 29 points in the win.
The final game for the girls was a 41-33 win over Princeton.Lawley led the way with 24 points and along with Jaydin Lees was named to the first All-Star team. The Eagles next home game is Tuesday Jan. 9, against Surrey’s Khalsa Secondary School.
The Senior Boys Basketball Team came in second as well during the weekend’s Hope Tournament.
In the two Friday games, the Chieftains topped Xit’Olacw Community School by a large margin and beat the Hope Mustangs 66-35, with every member of the team scoring a basket.
In the spirited final on Saturday, Agassiz lead 31-26 at the half, but costly turnovers, early foul trouble and Princeton’s hot 3-point shooting lead to an exciting win for Princeton by a score of 63-55. Tomas Walton and Simon Grieshaber-Otto were high scorers for Agassiz and were named among the tournament’s Most Valuable Players.
All the boys played with enthusiasm and pride throughout the weekend.
