The Mountain Institution COVID-19 outbreak in Agassiz has surpassed 100 positive cases.
Now entering its fourth week, the outbreak has surpassed the December-to-February outbreak at Kent Institution, which saw 99 inmates and at least 18 employees test positive for COVID-19. According to the latest information from Correctional Service Canada (CSC), 65 of the 112 inmates who tested positive for COVID-19 are now considered recovered; 47 active cases remain.
“The health and safety of our employees, inmates, and the public continue to be our top priority,” according to a press release issued April 20. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and measures are in place to minimize spread of the virus within the institution.”

The first reports of this outbreak appeared on April 4.
There have been no deaths associated with any COVID-19 outbreak in local CSC institutions.
There was a brief outbreak in January this year at Kwìkwèxwelhp Healing Lodge, during which 10 inmates were infected with COVID-19. The small outbreak lasted 11 days.
Of the local institutions, Mountain has the highest average vaccine coverage with 84.4 per cent of inmates receiving at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccination. 68 per cent of inmates have been double-vaccinated and boosted. Both numbers are higher than the provincial average.
