Basketball-sized rock flies through windshield

Boulder thrown from logging truck's tires

A rock that was thought to have fallen from above, causing a potentially mishap on the the Coquihalla Highway, was actually thrown up from the tires of a logging truck.

The incident happened Tuesday at about 1 p.m., about 25 km north of Hope.

A woman was driving behind a logging truck when a basketball sized rock came through her windshield. The rock then landed in her backseat.

The driver was injured and was airlifted to hospital to be treated. She was released on Wednesday with minor injuries, and the passenger in the vehicle at the time was uninjured.

"She was very lucky considering the rock went right through the windshield and came to rest in the back seat," said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck.  "We have seen this before where the vehicle occupant is not so lucky."

The Coquihalla was closed in both directions while emergency crews worked to have the woman airlifted for treatment.

Police initially believed the rock had fallen from above, from a hillside. They issued a statement on Wednesday stating they believe the rock was thrown from under the logging truck ahead of the woman.
