Fraser Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Glenwood Care Centre in Agassiz.

Five residents and six staff members have tested positive for COVID-19. Fraser Health reports all affected residents and staff are currently in self-isolation at their homes.

Fraser Health will have an additional presence at the care centre during the outbreak to answer questions, check for symptoms and support staff. Essential visits can continue, but social visits are restricted in the affected areas of the facility. Staff and resident movement have been modified to prevent further exposure.

An outbreak is different from an exposure. Health officials can declare a COVID-19 outbreak “when evidence is found of COVID-19 spread from one person who has tested positive for COVID-19 to another.”

There have been two outbreaks at Glenwood last year, infecting at least five residents and five staff members in 2021. No deaths have been associated with past outbreaks. There’s been a total of five outbreaks in Agassiz long-term care homes, two of which were at Agassiz Seniors Community in October and December of 2020.

Vaccination rates are high among the senior population in Agassiz-Harrison, with nearly 90 per cent of the 50-plus age group fully vaccinated; 76 per cent of people aged 70 and older are fully vaccinated and have received a booster.
