Change is imminent in Kent

Post throws hat into ring

The nomination period for the civic election comes to a close today, Friday, at 4 p.m., but early this week it was already clear that change is imminent on the District of Kent council.

The mayor of Kent, Lorne Fisher, will be seeking re-election, but this time as councillor.

Incumbent councillor John Van Laerhoven has announced he will be running for mayor. So far, he is the only candidate to do so.

The other three incumbent councillors have decided to run for council in the November 19 election. Holger Schwichtenberg was uncertain last week, but called the Observer Tuesday to announce he will run again.

He said the support of family and friends has encouraged him to continue his work on council.

Also running in the District of Kent is Duane Post, a local dairy farmer.

"It's just something I have wanted to do for a number of years already, and it's good timing for me," he told the Observer.

Post chairs the Agricultural Advisory Committee and is vice chair of the Ditch and Drainage Committee.

"I'm not running with any preconceived agendas," he said. "I just want Agassiz to grow, and to be a place where people can work and live."
