COVID-19 numbers settling back down in Agassiz-Harrison

Local cases of COVID-19 seem to have settled back down after several weeks in the double digits, according to the latest data.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has recorded six new cases of COVID-19 for the Agassiz-Harrison local health area, which brings the yearly total to 340. This is up slightly from the previous week with four cases but is a far cry from the most recent peak of 34 cases back in mid-September.

In 2021, there has been an average of eight cases of COVID-19 per week in Agassiz-Harrison.

There have been no new COVID-19 exposure events in Fraser-Cascade School District 78 for three weeks, the last events expiring on Oct. 8 at Agassiz Elementary Secondary School and Kent Elementary School.

Vaccination rates continue their steady, gradual climb. As of Tuesday, Oct. 25, 78 per cent of the currently eligible local population over the age of 12 has been vaccinated (84 per cent partially vaccinated). 60 per cent of children aged 12 to 17 have been fully vaccinated, up 2 per cent since last week (62 per cent partially vaccinated).

The 18-and-over demographic is closing in on 80 per cent vaccination with 79 per cent of the population being fully vaccinated (85 per cent partially vaccinated). The 18-49 category is 67 per cent fully vaccinated (77 per cent partially vaccinated).

The 50-plus population saw no change in vaccination rates; they are closing in on the 90-per cent threshold with 87 per cent being fully vaccinated as of Oct. 25 (90 per cent partially vaccinated).

According to an Oct. 21 data summary from the BCCDC, case rates are stable throughout Fraser Health. Over the past week, 60 per cent of new COVID-19 cases were among unvaccinated people (7 per cent partially vaccinated, 33 per cent fully vaccinate). Unvaccinated individuals also accounted for 75 per cent of hospitalizations (4 per cent partially vaccinated, 21 per cent fully vaccinated).

An update from Health Minister Adrian Dix indicated 87 percent of people in critical care due to COVID-19 are not fully vaccinated, spanning a wide range primarily from 30 to 79.

There are currently no upcoming vaccine clinics for the Agassiz-Harrison area. The nearest ongoing clinic is in Chilliwack at the Chilliwack COVID-19 Testing and Immunization Centre at 9090 Newman Road, daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. There is also a vaccination clinic in Hope running Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Hope COVID-19 Testing and Immunization Centre at 1275 7th Avenue.
