COVID-19 vaccines roll out for local children as infection rates remain low

COVID-19 numbers are staying low in the local health area.

It’s been a full month since Agassiz-Harrison’s COVID-19 cases have exceeded the local yearly average of about eight cases a week. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has recorded five new cases of COVID-19 between Nov. 28 and Dec. 4. This is up slightly from last week’s three cases but continues a four-week, single-digit trend for Agassiz-Harrison.

There has been a total of 386 cases of COVID-19 in Agassiz-Harrison in 2021 to date.

There are two active exposure events in Fraser-Cascade School District 78, one of which is in Agassiz. As of Dec. 9, Fraser Health reports someone with COVID-10 attended Agassiz Elementary Secondary School on Nov. 30 and another COVID-positive person attended Hope Secondary School on Nov. 24 and 25. Unless you are personally notified by Fraser Health, no action is required. There have been 13 COVID-19 exposure events in the district so far this school year, 10 of which have been in Agassiz schools.

COVID-19 vaccines are rolling out for 5-11-year-olds throughout the province, including in Agassiz-Harrison. As of Dec. 6, 7 per cent of children in the age group have received their first dose of the vaccine. 81 per cent of the population over the age of 12 in Agassiz-Harrison has been fully vaccinated (85 per cent partially vaccinated). 64 per cent of children aged 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated (71 per cent partially vaccinated).

82 per cent of Agassiz-Harrison residents over the age of 18 have been fully vaccinated (86 per cent partially vaccinated). 73 per cent of residents in the 18-49 category are fully vaccinated (80 per cent partially vaccinated).

88 per cent of Agassiz-Harrison residents aged 50 and older are fully vaccinated (90 per cent partially vaccinated). 61 per cent of locals aged 70 and older have received a COVID-19 booster.

According to the latest data summary from the BCCDC, COVID-19 case rates are dropping across the province, decreasing in four of five health areas in B.C. Hospitalizations are also declining while critical care census is stable. Deaths across the province are low and stable.

Over the course of the past month, unvaccinated individuals – who make up about 19 per cent of B.C.’s population – comprise about 56 per cent of new cases, 69 per cent of COVID-19 hospitalizations and 80 per cent of critical care admissions.
