The province’s decision to reopen fitness facilities includes the District of Kent.

Effective Thursday (Jan. 20), per a decision from B.C. health officials, the district’s Community Recreation and Cultural Centre (CRCC) is reopening its weight room and restarting fitness classes.

A 24-hour advanced booking will be required for both. Proof of vaccination rules in place since last autumn still apply, and vaccine passes will be required for all participants aged 12 years and older (with exceptions for children’s sports and recreation activities. Masks must be worn when not participating in physical activity.

Per regular, ongoing and widespread social distancing regulations, two metres of spacing is required for all participants in fitness classes or exercising in the weight room.

Provincial health officials ordered the closure of gyms and other related fitness facilities just before Christmas, at which time the CRCC announced a nearly month-long restriction on weight room use, group fitness classes and indoor celebratory events. At that time, gymnasium use and recreational programs continued uninterrupted.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the decision was difficult but did give officials time to assess the current situation.

The CRCC was also shut down during the first year of the pandemic in November of 2020 due to COVID-19, suspending all fitness classes until further notice but keeping weight rooms open with limited capacity and in structured training sessions.
